Birth, Why I Fell in Love

Follow my journey into the world of birth.

It’s her birthday and she already has her daddy wrapped around her finger

Do you remember holding your tiny baby close for the first time? The relief that labor is over, that everything is ok? The smell of her still wet hair? The warmth of her tiny, squishy body against yours? The sound of her little lungs finding air for the first time? Do you remember the overwhelming love that you felt? This is my journey into falling in love with that moment, with birth, with the journey into motherhood.

I gave birth to my oldest son almost… ahem 23yearsago… in Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, TX. My doctor decided to induce me at 38 weeks due to the baby not growing as fast as he should have.

I was 20 and as much as I tried to educate myself, there were just not the resources available that we have today. I did not have YouTube or Facebook, or mommy groups online. I had books, you know the paper kind…I read everything that I could get my hands on. I knew how I wanted my birth to be.
I went in with a plan, but little to no support. I wanted to have a natural labor and delivery. However, the nurse insisted on asking if I was ready for drugs 🙄🤦‍♀️ Things did not go as well as I had planned. If you are a control freak like I am, that is hard to process.

Joshua was born, but he stopped breathing in the nursery. He spent some time in NICU, then transferred for a week into the newborn nursery. I did not want to re-live this experience, so I was determined to figure out what my options were and to work toward a different kind of birth story.

Two years later, pregnant with my second child, I started looking for options. By this time, we did have the internet. (I know what you are thinking— How OLD is this woman?) I read blogs and all of the information and stats that I could find.
I met- and fell in love with- Sylyna who is a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife).  If you have met her, you know that she has the calm assurance of a woman who walks with Jesus. In Texas, you can birth at home with a CNM, and that is exactly what I decided to do.

She told me to trust my body, and believed that I was strong enough to have the natural birth I wanted. 💪 So, even though my friends and family all thought that I was crazy, I planned for a homebirth and did everything I could to prepare for birthing my baby at home.
Did everything go perfectly? No… I remember throwing my dad’s shoes across the room because they smelled to high heaven… and I literally crawled on all fours to the bedroom because it hurt to stand. The floor was much more comfortable…
Sylyna laughed about my crawling and said that I didn’t want to birth in the hospital because they wouldn’t let me crawl down the hallway… Well, they probably would have frowned upon that.
But I did have my natural birth. I was heard, and I was given strength to birth my way.

The sweet relief of holding your new baby
I knew then that I wanted to be involved in birth. I wanted to help educate women to trust their bodies and to stand up for themselves- to love themselves enough to demand that their needs are met. One way that I help women to celebrate life is by teaming up with resource centers like Living Alternatives ministry. I do maternity sessions and newborn sessions as a way to celebrate their decision to choose life.
So, here I am, several years later, fulfilling that calling and hopefully showing women how strong they can be.
Remember, you are STRONG, you are POWERFUL, you are SMART, you are BEAUTIFUL, you are ENOUGH. You are the daughter of the One True King, and you sweet girl, YOU are loved FIERCELY.

Being able to witness a mother fall in love with her baby is the most rewarding experience. Helping you to remember every beautiful detail is a gift that I want to give to you.
